Live like a local in Music City

Live like a local in Music City

People come to Nashville for a visit and certain attractions are always on their list of things to do, like the Grand Ole Opry, the Belle Meade Plantation, Ryman Auditorium, and the Country Music Hall of Fame. Those (and many more like them) are the obvious places to see in Nashville and the surrounding area. But when this Music City becomes your home, here are some ways to live like a local!

Take in the architectural eclectica

Local architect Nicky Dryden described the city’s architecture as “place making”. He explained that the design blends a passion for “urban anthropology and cultural salvaging”. It’s all about reinvention. An old service station was converted to a hip retail boutique. You can walk around the city and see lovingly preserved remnants of the Old South, landmarks like the Union Station, and contemporary structures (AT&T Building, Fifth Third Center).

Find the best-kept secrets for fabulous food finds

Southern cooking is a perfect blend of flavor and ingenuity. Your list of “Where to Eat in Nashville” should include locally-owned eateries. Grab a quick bite from one of the hundreds of food trucks throughout the Greater Nashville area, each of them completely redefining your expectation of fast food. Martin’s BBQ Joint and Edley’s Bar-B-Que serve up some of the best barbecue in the city. Arnold’s Country Kitchen is renowned for its fried chicken and banana pudding. Feast on flaky biscuits from scratch and “meat ‘n’ three” lunch choices at the Loveless Café. Take the family to Swett’s for cafeteria-style dining with good home-cooking. Of course, there’s legendary hot chicken, a local treat so popular it has its own association, the Nashville Hot Chicken Coalition, and the Annual Music City Hot Chicken Festival.

Cheer on the Titans

The Tennessee Titans are a big favorite in Greater Nashville. The NFL team continues to play harder, get stronger, and climb toward the top of its division. During football season, join a crowd of fans at any of the local sports bars, or head to the Nissan Stadium in Nashville to get a closer look at the action.

Take part in the festivals

One of the best ways to fit seamlessly into the Greater Nashville landscape is to join the locals in one of their many celebrations. Nashville loves its festivals, and you can take your pick among many: Americana Music Festival, Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Tin Pan South Songwriter’s Festival, Ragin’ Cajun Crawfish Boil, Wild West Comedy Festival, Tennessee Renaissance Festival, Tomato Art Festival, NAIA Pow Wow, and Full Moon Pickin’ Parties, to name only a few.

Hang out at the park

Take your kids, your dog, your bike, your lunch, or just yourself to one of the scenic parks around Nashville. Centennial Park is a favorite place to get outdoors on a sunny Tennessee day. The park’s 132 acres include walking trails, a dog park, a band shell, the famous Parthenon, sand volleyball courts, a sunken garden, and the scenic Lake Watauga.
